Apollo: Meaning, Symbols & the Greek God of the Sun
Of all the Olympians, none shone quite like Apollo. Son of Zeus and twin brother of Artemis, he was the god of light, music, poetry, prophecy, healing and archery — the very image of harmony and reason. Where other gods ruled a single domain, Apollo presided over the things that make life luminous: a song well sung, a truth well spoken, a wound well healed.
He was born on the little island of Delos, and grew to become the most Greek of gods — the patron of the Oracle at Delphi, whose prophecies guided kings and cities for a thousand years, and the leader of the nine Muses themselves.

The laurel is his most tender symbol. When the nymph Daphne fled his love and was turned into a laurel tree, Apollo made her leaves his emblem — and so the laurel wreath came to crown poets, victors and champions ever after.
